SCMS: Empowering Europe’s Waterways for the Future

The Synchromodal Corridor Management System (SCMS) aims to make cargo transportation on EU rivers more resilient, reliable and attractive. It helps plan shipments more efficiently, reducing road traffic and cutting down on pollution, supporting business growth while protecting the environment.

About SCMS

The Synchromodal Corridor Management System (SCMS), is a platform that aims to enhance the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of inland waterway transport in EU. It is part of the CRISTAL project , funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program, and developed by the Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT), part of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), in collaboration with other partners.

The SCMS is designed to support various stakeholders involved in inland waterway transport, such as shippers, carriers, terminal operators, authorities, policy makers, and researchers. By using the platform, users can benefit from improved decision making, increased reliability and resilience, reduced costs and emissions, and enhanced competitiveness and innovation.

Features

Alerting system

It notifies users of any real-time or forecasted disruptions on the waterways, such as accidents, congestion, weather conditions, water levels, etc.

Data collecting

Data extraction from sensors placed throughout the rivers that collect and transmit information on various parameters, such as traffic flows, vessel positions, emissions, fuel consumption, etc.

Personalization

Personalized preferences section that allows users to customize their settings and preferences according to their needs and interests, such as preferred routes, modes of transport, cargo types, etc.

Route Planning

Route planning assessment that helps users to plan their trips on the waterways and optimize their costs, time and environmental impact. The platform also offers multimodal rerouting capabilities in case of unexpected events or changes in the conditions.

Corridor metrics

Corridor observatory that includes corridor-specific key performance indicators (KPIs) as well as operational metrics that measure and monitor the performance of the waterway transport system and its impact on the economy, society, and environment.
